"I don't understand. What exactly is it you need to know?" Vissy Finnora asked after we sat down in her solar. It was a far more intimate setting than the large throne room where she and Vissigroth Cyros had welcomed Oksana and me.

I sighed. "I don't even know for sure myself. I only know that your DNA, along with other noble seffies of your family, has been erased from the genealogy databank."

"And you think that one of them might have been your mother?"

I knew I was grasping at straws. Grasping desperately to find out who my parents were and, for some reason, hoping they hadn't been simple farmers. I didn't know why the latter bothered me; there was nothing wrong with lower Leanders, but for some reason, my pride asked for more. The first I didn't only want to know for my benefit. I hoped to find evidence that Kennenryn had been involved in switching Thalia and me so we could confront the bastard once and for all. The latter was only to serve my ego.

I supposed even though I had found favor with Grandyr, I was still somewhat snobbish and prideful.

"Can you think of any seffy who was pregnant around the same time as Vissy Daphne?"

Vissy Finnora's expression remained unreadable, but the look she exchanged with Cyros made my heart beat a little faster. Something was there, I could almost taste it. Now I just needed to convince the rulers of the Agradyr territory to let me in on their secret.

"Please, if you know anything, Myccael is desperate to find his mother and father," Oksana pleaded for me.

Cyros's expression softened when he looked at Oksana. From the moment we entered, it was easy to see that she found favor with him. And my shrewd little human exploited it mercilessly.

"It is not my secret to tell," Cyros said at last.

"We don't even know anything for sure," Finnora added.

My heart beat faster in anticipation.

Cyros's mind seemed to travel far away. He wasn't as old as Mallack, but was probably the second oldest Vissigroth in the Fourteen Planets, but right then, he seemed older. As if shadows of the past were catching up with him.

"I haven't seen my sister Minhalla in over twenty-five rotations. If Kennenryn ever finds her…" he trailed off and turned to his vissy, who placed a hand on his. "It's been over twenty-five rotations, surely the great susserayn has forgotten about her by now." Finnora argued softly.

My blood turned cold without me being able to say why. But a foreboding feeling began to spread through me and for the first time, I wondered if maybe I should leave this alone.

I had enough credits to live comfortably with Oksana at any place we chose. We could even conquer another galaxy if we wanted to. Every door stood open to us, and as I blinked, a million different paths took shape in front of my eyes. Still, all I could focus on was the rockiest, narrowest path among them. One that seemed filled with stones and roots to trip over and hold me back.
